Carolyn Hesse-Low
Nationally recognized artist Carolyn Hesse-Low graduated from University of California,
Santa Barbara, and continued her training at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena.
In the style of the early California Impressionists, her plein air landscapes, figures
and marine subjects capture the changing mood and rugged beauty of what she sees.
Carolyn’s paintings have been exhibited at the National Arts Club in New York, and
at Laguna Art Museum, Pasadena Museum of California Art, Napa Valley Museum, Frederick
R. Weisman Art Museum, Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, Water Mill Museum, and San
Diego Maritime Museum. Her work has been shown in numerous national exhibitions,
and she has been selected to paint in plein air events throughout the West.
Carolyn was featured in Southwest Art Magazine in 2008, “Artists to Watch: Our picks
for 10 promising talents to keep an eye on this year”. Her work appears in the book
Land of Sunlight: Paintings of San Diego County, published by San Diego Flora, 2007.
Her work is also included in Plein Air New Mexico, published by Jack Richeson Fine
Art, 2006.
Carolyn’s work was selected for Plein Air Magazine’s Publisher’s Choice Award. Her
many awards include the William Shultz Award for Oil from the American Impressionist
Society; the Tyrus Wong Memorial Award from the National Watercolor Society; the
Dorothy Barberis Memorial Award, Award of Excellence and First and Second Place
Awards from the Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club; Juror’s Award from the California
Art Club; First Place Awards from the Society of Western Artists and Laguna Plein
Air Painters Association; and awards from the San Diego Maritime Museum and Carmel
Plein Air Art Festival.
Carolyn Hesse-Low is a Signature Member of the National Oil and Acrylic Painters
Society, the National Watercolor Society, and the Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Art
Club. She is an Artist Member of the California Art Club, and a member of Oil Painters
of America, the American Impressionist Society, and Laguna Plein Air Painters Association.
Works by Carolyn Hesse-Low are represented in national and international collections.
